757 AM EDT TUE MAR 31 2015

FORECAST IS BASED ON IGNITION TIME OF 0900 EDT ON MARCH 31.
IF CONDITIONS BECOME UNREPRESENTATIVE...CONTACT THE NATIONAL WEATHER
SERVICE.

.DISCUSSION...

WESTERLY WIND FLOW REMAINED IN PLACE OVERNIGHT...MAINTAINING LOW
HUMIDITY WHICH ALLOWED FOR ONLY MODEST RECOVERY OF FUEL MOISTURES.
THE DOWNSLOPE FLOW WILL COMBINE WITH ABUNDANT SUNSHINE THIS MORNING
TO CAUSE TEMPERATURES TO RISE QUICKLY AFTER SUNRISE...AND RESULT IN
RELATIVE HUMIDITY VALUES DROPPING TO AROUND 20 PERCENT THIS AFTERNOON.

A DEEP LOW PRESSURE SYSTEM WILL PASS ACROSS THE SOUTHERN GREAT
LAKES INTO CENTRAL PENNSYLVANIA THIS AFTERNOON...CAUSING WINDS
TO SHIFT MORE SOUTHWESTERLY AFTER SUNRISE AND WIND SPEEDS TO INCREASE
THROUGH THE MORNING INTO THE AFTERNOON. WIND SPEEDS BY EARLY AFTERNOON
WILL INCREASE TO 10-20 MPH AND GUST TO AROUND 30 MPH AT TIMES.

THE LOW PRESSURE SYSTEM WILL DRAG A COLD FRONT ACROSS THE FORECAST
AREA THIS EVENING. ONLY A FEW CLOUDS ARE EXPECTED WITH THE FRONT. ANY
PRECIPITATION...WHAT LITTLE THERE IS...WILL BE ACROSS THE ALLEGHANYS.
THE CHANCE OF A WETTING RAIN IN THE PRESCRIBED BURN AREA IS ZERO.

FUELS WILL CONTINUE TO DRY OUT THROUGH MIDWEEK. HIGH PRESSURE
BUILDS OVERHEAD ON WEDNESDAY...RESULTING IN LIGHT WINDS...THEN MOVES
OFFSHORE ON THURSDAY. MOISTURE RETURNS WITH SHOWERY WEATHER ANTICIPATED
FOR THURSDAY NIGHT INTO EARLY SATURDAY.

SPOT FORECAST FOR SHORT HILLS MTN...VDOF
NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE BLACKSBURG VA
902 PM EDT MON MAR 30 2015

FORECAST IS BASED ON REQUEST TIME OF 2044 EDT ON MARCH 30.
IF CONDITIONS BECOME UNREPRESENTATIVE...CONTACT THE NATIONAL WEATHER
SERVICE.

.DISCUSSION...
DRY AIR WILL CONTINUE TO PERSIST OVERNIGHT WITH HUMIDITY ONLY RECOVERING
TO AROUND 60 OR 70 PERCENT AT LOWER ELEVATIONS WHILE LIKELY REMAINING BETWEEN
30 AND 50 PERCENT ABOVE 2500 FEET DESPITE SOME INCREASE IN MID AND HIGH CLOUDS.
GUSTY WEST WINDS SHOULD DIMINISH TO LESS THAN 10 MPH IN THE VALLEYS BUT
CONTINUE TO GUST TO 25 MPH ALONG THE RIDGES THROUGH DAWN TUESDAY.

A LOW PRESSURE SYSTEM PASSES TO THE NORTH ON TUESDAY WITH MOST MOISTURE
REMAINING JUST NORTH OF THE AREA. THIS SYSTEM WILL SWING ANOTHER WEAK
COLD FRONT THROUGH THE REGION IN THE AFTERNOON ALLOWING THE WIND GRADIENT
TO AGAIN INCREASE WITH WEST/NORTHWEST WINDS AGAIN GUSTING TO 25-35 MPH
ACROSS THE RIDGES AND 20-25 MPH IN THE VALLEYS. THIS ENHANCED MIXING UNDER
PERIODS OF SUNSHINE WILL CAUSE HUMIDITY TO AGAIN PLUMMET BACK TO BELOW 30
PERCENT AND POSSIBLY INTO THE TEENS ABOVE 2000-2500 FEET TUESDAY AFTERNOON.

FORECAST IS BASED ON IGNITION TIME OF 0645 EDT ON MARCH 30.
IF CONDITIONS BECOME UNREPRESENTATIVE...CONTACT THE NATIONAL WEATHER
SERVICE.

.DISCUSSION...
A STRONG COLD FRONT WILL MOVE THROUGH THE REGION TODAY. A FEW SPRINKLES
OR LIGHT RAIN SHOWERS THROUGH THE MID-MORNING WILL GIVE WAY TO A MOSTLY
SUNNY...BREEZY AFTERNOON. ANY WETTING RAIN WILL BE BRIEF...AND GENERALLY
PRIOR TO 10 AM EDT. THE DOWNSLOPE WEST WINDS WILL RESULT IN OVERALL CONTINUED
DRYING OF FUELS AND AFTERNOON MINIMUM RELATIVE HUMIDITY VALUES DROPPING INTO
THE UPPER 20S TO LOWER 30S RANGE. LIGHT SOUTHWEST WINDS EARLY THIS MORNING WILL
BECOME WEST TO NORTHWEST DURING THE LATE MORNING THROUGH THE LATE AFTERNOON AT
SPEEDS OF 10 TO 13 MPH WITH GUSTS OF 20 TO 25 MPH. WINDS WILL DIMINISH
CONSIDERABLY AFTER SUNSET AND BECOME SOUTHWEST TOWARD MIDNIGHT. THESE CONDITIONS
WILL RESULT IN NEAR CRITICAL FIRE WEATHER CONDITIONS BY AFTERNOON. A FIRE DANGER
STATEMENT MAY BE NEEDED WITH LATER FORECASTS.

TUESDAY APPEARS TO BE EVEN MORE CRITICAL AS A STRONG LOW PRESSURE SYSTEM PASSES
EASTWARD ACROSS THE SOUTHERN GREAT LAKES. SOUTHWESTERLY WIND FLOW WILL
SUPPORT EVEN WARMER TEMPERATURES...RESULTING IN MINIMUM RELATIVE HUMIDITY VALUES
BETWEEN 20 AND 25 PERCENT. WINDS GUSTS OF 25 TO 30 MPH WILL BE COMMON ACROSS
MUCH OF THE AREA. THESE CONDITIONS WILL HAVE A STRONG DRYING AFFECT ON FUELS.

.DISCUSSION...

A COLD FRONT WILL PASS ACROSS THE BURN SITE AROUND 10 AM LATER THIS
MORNING...RESULTING IN A WEST NORTHWESTERLY WIND SHIFT. SPOTTY SHOWERS
WILL PASS ACROSS THE AREA AROUND SUNRISE...HOWEVER BEST CASE SCENARIO
FOR WETTING RAIN LOOKS TO BE ONLY A FEW HUNDREDTHS OF AN INCH. BEHIND
THE COLD FRONT...CLOUD COVER WILL DIMINISH QUICKLY SUCH THAT EXPECT
MOSTLY SUNNY SKIES AT THE BURN SITE BY EARLY AFTERNOON.

WIND SPEEDS WILL BE A CONCERN...AS WINDS REACH 15 TO 20 MPH SUSTAINED
AND GUST AS HIGH AS 30 MPH AT TIMES FROM LATE MORNING INTO LATE
AFTERNOON. WINDS SHOULD HELP QUICKLY DRY ANY FUELS MOISTENED BY
LIGHT RAINFALL AMOUNTS. DEWPOINTS WILL RISE TOWARD DAWN AS SPOTTY
RAINFALL HELPS MOISTEN THE ATMOSPHERE...AND DO NOT EXPECT MUCH OF A
DROP IN DEWPOINTS THROUGH THE DAY FROM SUNRISE OBSERVATIONS. AFTERNOON
RH WILL BOTTOM OUT AROUND 30 PERCENT.
