TUESDAY MARCH 17, 2015 IS TORNADO PREPAREDNESS DAY IN VIRGINIA. AT
945 AM THAT DAY, THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE WILL CONDUCT A
STATEWIDE TORNADO DRILL. ALL NWS OFFICES SERVING VIRGINIA WILL ISSUE
DRILL TORNADO MESSAGES AT THAT TIME. THE PURPOSE OF THIS DRILL IS TO
PROVIDE SCHOOLS...BUSINESSES AND RESIDENTS OF THE COMMONWEALTH WITH
THE OPPORTUNITY TO ACTIVATE AND TEST THEIR EMERGENCY PLANS FOR
TORNADOES. SHOULD SEVERE WEATHER THREATEN VIRGINIA ON MARCH
17TH...THE TORNADO DRILL WILL BE POSTPONED UNTIL 945 AM WEDNESDAY
MARCH 18TH.

IN ADDITION...ON WEDNESDAY...MARCH 4TH...NORTH CAROLINA WILL ALSO
CONDUCT A STATEWIDE TORNADO DRILL AT 930 AM EST. SHOULD SEVERE
WEATHER THREATEN NORTH CAROLINA ON MARCH 4TH...THE TORNADO DRILL
WILL BE POSTPONED UNTIL 930 AM FRIDAY MARCH 6TH. THE FOLLOWING
PROCEDURES WILL BE USED FOR THE VIRGINIA AND NORTH CAROLINA
TORNADO DRILLS.

...VIRGINIA TORNADO DRILL...

THE VIRGINIA TORNADO DRILL WILL UTILIZE A TEST TORNADO WARNING...
JUST AS IN 2014. ALL NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE OFFICES WILL ISSUE
THIS TEST TORNADO WARNING UNDER THE STANDARD TORNADO WARNING PRODUCT
PIL (TORXXX...WHERE XXX DENOTES THE OFFICE 3 LETTER ID). NOAA
WEATHER RADIO WILL TRANSMIT THE TEST WARNING AS IT NORMALLY WOULD
FOR A REAL TORNADO EVENT. AND THE EMERGENCY ALERT SYSTEM (EAS) WILL
ALSO BE ACTIVATED AS IF THE DRILL WERE AN ACTUAL TORNADO WARNING.
HOWEVER...THE PRODUCT TEXT WILL CLEARLY INDICATE THAT IT IS A
TEST...AND NOT AN ACTUAL TORNADO WARNING. THEREFORE...ANYONE
RECEIVING THE TORNADO DRILL VIA NOAA WEATHER RADIO...OR COMMERCIAL
RADIO AND TELEVISION...WILL BE ABLE TO KNOW THAT THE ACTIVATION IS
FOR TORNADO DRILL PURPOSES.

IF SEVERE WEATHER IS ANTICIPATED...OR IS OCCURRING ON TUESDAY MARCH
11TH...THE TORNADO DRILL WILL BE POSTPONED UNTIL WEDNESDAY MARCH
18TH AT 945 AM.

...NORTH CAROLINA TORNADO DRILL...

A DRILL TORNADO MESSAGE, USING THE REQUIRED MONTHLY TEST (RMT)
PRODUCT, WILL BE ISSUED BY ALL NWS OFFICES SERVING NORTH CAROLINA ON
MARCH 4TH. THIS NOTIFICATION WILL ALSO BE BROADCAST ON NOAA WEATHER
RADIO. THE EMERGENCY ALERT SYSTEM (EAS) WILL ALSO BE ACTIVATED...
USING THE REQUIRED MONTHLY TEST (RMT) EVENT CODE. MEDIA OUTLETS
THROUGHOUT NORTH CAROLINA ARE ASKED TO PARTICIPATE IN THIS DRILL BY
RE-BROADCASTING THE DRILL MESSAGE. THIS WILL ALLOW THE DRILL TO
RECEIVE MAXIMUM EXPOSURE AND INCREASE PARTICIPATION.

IF SEVERE WEATHER IS ANTICIPATED...OR IS OCCURRING NORTH CAROLINA
ON WEDNESDAY MARCH 4TH...THE TORNADO DRILL WILL BE POSTPONED UNTIL
FRIDAY MARCH 6TH AT 930 AM.

...IMPORTANT...SCHOOLS AND BUSINESSES USING NOAA WEATHER RADIO TO
PARTICIPATE IN THE 2015 NORTH CAROLINA TORNADO DRILL SHOULD TURN ON
THEIR NOAA WEATHER RADIO RECEIVERS APPROXIMATELY 5 MINUTES PRIOR TO
THE DRILL /925 AM IN NORTH CAROLINA/...IN ORDER TO INSURE THE DRILL
IS PROPERLY RECEIVED.
