COONTAIL ROAD. TREES WERE UPROOTED AND BROKEN...AND FALLING TREES
DAMAGED THE ROOFS OF SEVERAL HOUSES. DAMAGE ALONG THIS TRACK WAS
INTERMITTENT. SOUTH OF THE TRACK...AN AREA OF NON-TORNADIC WIND
DAMAGE WAS NOTED.

TREES WERE UPROOTED AND BROKEN...AND LIGHT POLES WERE BENT. FALLING
TREES DAMAGED THE ROOFS OF SEVERAL HOUSES...CARPORTS...AND STORAGE
SHEDS. OTHER HOMES HAD AREAS OF SHINGLES REMOVED. THE OBSERVED
DAMAGE SUPPORTS A RATING OF EF-1...WITH MAXIMUM WINDS OF
APPROXIMATELY 95 MPH.

THE PATH LENGTH SHOWN ABOVE REPRESENTS THE EXTENT OF THE DAMAGE
SURVEYED BY THE TEAM. RADAR DATA SUGGESTS THAT THE TORNADO MAY
HAVE CROSSED THE TOMBIGBEE RIVER NORTHEAST OF AMORY...AND
CONTINUED THROUGH A REMOTE FORESTED AREA JUST NORTH OF THE
RIVER. THE RADAR SIGNAL DIMINISHED OVER POOL B OF THE TOMBIGBEE
RIVER 1 TO 2 MILES WEST OF SMITHVILLE. THE SURVEY TEAM WAS UNABLE
TO ACCESS THIS AREA. IF IN FACT THIS OCCURRED...THE TOTAL PATH
LENGTH WOULD BE 8.1 MILES WITH AN ENDING TIME OF APPROXIMATELY
9:06 AM CDT.

SERVICE IN MEMPHIS SURVEYED THE DAMAGE FROM MONDAY MORNING/S
STORMS IN MONROE COUNTY. THE SURVEY TEAM FOUND EVIDENCE OF TWO
TORNADOES.

THE FIRST TORNADO OCCURRED SOUTHWEST OF AMORY...AND AFFECTED AREAS
SOUTH OF HIGHWAY 278...NEAR MCALLISTER ROAD...AND NEAR LITTLE
COONTAIL ROAD. TREES WERE UPROOTED AND BROKEN...AND FALLING TREES
DAMAGED THE ROOFS OF SEVERAL HOUSES. THIS TORNADO WILL BE RATED

SHEDS. OTHER HOMES HAD AREAS OF SHINGLES REMOVED. THE OBSERVED
DAMAGE SUPPORTS A RATING OF EF-1...WITH MAXIMUM WINDS OF
APPROXIMATELY 95 MPH. HOWEVER...OTHER EVIDENCE MAY SUGGEST A
RATING IN THE LOWER EF-2 RANGE. THIS EVIDENCE WILL BE FURTHER
EVALUATED ON TUESDAY.

THE TEAM SURVEYED THE DAMAGE IN THE SMITHVILLE AREA. BASED ON THIS
SURVEY AND INTERVIEWS WITH EYEWITNESSES...IT APPEARS THIS DAMAGE
WAS CAUSED BY NON-TORNADIC WINDS ON THE SOUTH SIDE OF THE STORM/S
AREA OF ROTATION.

NWS METEOROLOGISTS WILL CONTINUE THEIR ANALYSIS OF THE DAMAGE
AREAS...AND DETAILED INFORMATION WILL APPEAR IN AN UPDATED REPORT

ROTATION MOVING INTO WESTERN MONROE COUNTY AROUND 8:30
AM...TRACKING ON THE NORTH SIDE OF AMORY AND SMITHVILLE BEFORE
WEAKENING AND MOVING INTO SOUTH ITAWAMBA SHORTLY AFTER 9:00 AM.
INITIAL REPORTS OF DAMAGE WERE RECEIVED AROUND 9:10 AM. FOLLOWING
THAT REPORT...NUMEROUS ADDITIONAL REPORTS OF DAMAGE AND PICTURES
WERE RECEIVED VIA SOCIAL MEDIA OVER THE NEXT COUPLE OF HOURS.
SEVERE THUNDERSTORM WARNINGS WERE IN EFFECT BETWEEN 8:00 AND 9:30
AM AND TORNADO WARNINGS WERE IN EFFECT BETWEEN 8:35 AND 9:15. NO
INJURIES HAVE BEEN REPORTED. INCIDENTALLY...SMITHVILLE, MS WAS
DEVASTATED BY AN EF-5 TORNADO ON APRIL 27, 2011.
