RANGELAND FIRE DANGER STATEMENT
NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE SIOUX FALLS SD
506 AM CDT TUE MAR 31 2015

.DISCUSSION...

DESPITE VERY LOW HUMIDITY AGAIN TODAY...LIGHTER WINDS WILL MEAN
THAT MUCH OF THE AREA WILL GET A REPRIEVE TODAY FROM THE VERY
HIGH TO EXTREME FIRE DANGER FROM THE PAST SEVERAL DAYS. THE
EXCEPTION WILL BE WHERE SOUTHERLY RETURN FLOW INCREASES THIS
AFTERNOON THROUGH LOWER BRULE LOCATIONS...WHERE A VERY HIGH FIRE
DANGER WILL CONTINUE. WEDNESDAY APPEARS TO BE A DAY OF GREATER
CONCERN WITH VERY STRONG SOUTHERLY WINDS AHEAD OF A STRONG FRONTAL
ZONE...SHIFTING NORTHWEST BEHIND THE FRONT. HUMIDITY WILL DROP
MARKEDLY DURING THE MIDDAY AND AFTERNOON AFTER THE FRONTAL PASSAGE
ACROSS SOUTHEAST SOUTH DAKOTA. AREAS FROM THE JAMES VALLEY
WESTWARD WILL FIND HUMIDITY DROPPING TO 15 TO 25 PERCENT...AND
WITH NORTHWEST WINDS LIKELY 25 KNOTS OR GREATER WITH ADDITIONAL
GUSTINESS...HAVE ISSUED A FIRE WEATHER WATCH FOR FIRE WEATHER
ZONES 255 AND 256.

LOOKING AHEAD...THURSDAY WILL ALSO LIKELY BE A DAY OF VERY HIGH TO
EXTREME FIRE DANGER...AS AFTERNOON RELATIVE HUMIDITY AREA WIDE
SINKS TO 15 TO 25 PERCENT WITH GUSTY NORTHWEST WINDS.

DEBRIS BURNING IS THE NUMBER ONE CAUSE OF WILDFIRES...SO PLEASE
BE CAREFUL WITH ANY USE OF FIRE.

BURNING CONDITIONS EXIST. FIRES WILL SPREAD RAPIDLY AND
SHOW ERRATIC BEHAVIOR. OUTDOOR BURNING IS NOT RECOMMENDED.

RANGELAND FIRE DANGER STATEMENT
NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE SIOUX FALLS SD
356 AM CDT MON MAR 30 2015

.DISCUSSION...
DEEP MIXING IN A DRY ATMOSPHERE IN ANTICIPATED THIS AFTERNOON...
RESULTING IN WARM TEMPERATURES...COLLAPSING DEW POINTS...AND
GUSTY WEST TO NORTHWEST WINDS. WINDS SHOULD AVERAGE 20 TO 30 MPH
WITH GUSTS TO 35 MPH AT TIMES. WITH VERY DRY AIR MIXING TO THE
SURFACE...LOWEST HUMIDITY LEVELS WILL BE IN THE 15 TO 25 PERCENT
RANGE FOR A GOOD PORTION OF THE AFTERNOON. THIS WILL RESULT IN
EXTREME FIRE DANGER THIS AFTERNOON...AND A RED FLAG WARNING HAS
BEEN ISSUED FROM NOON TO 8 PM. CONDITIONS WILL RAPIDLY IMPROVED
BY SUNSET AS MIXING COMES TO A HALT.

ELEVATED FIRE DANGER IS LIKELY THROUGHOUT THE AREA WEDNESDAY DUE
TO STRONG WINDS AROUND A FRONT MOVING THROUGH THE AREA. HIGHER
HUMIDITY LEVELS AHEAD OF THE FRONT WILL RESTRICT FIRE DANGER TO
VERY HIGH ACROSS NORTHWEST IOWA AND SOUTHWEST MINNESOTA. HOWEVER
SOME EXTREME FIRE DANGER IS POSSIBLE DURING THE AFTERNOON WEST OF
INTERSTATE 29 BEHIND FRONT...WHERE HUMIDITY WILL DROP TO 20 TO 30
PERCENT AND NORTHWEST WINDS BECOME GUSTY.

DEEP MIXING WILL LEAD TO ANOTHER DAY OF AT LEAST VERY HIGH FIRE
DANGER ON THURSDAY.

CONSIDER POSTPONING BURNING DUE TO THE EXTREME FIRE DANGER.
PEOPLE ARE URGED TO EXERCISE EXTREME CARE WITH RESPECT TO OUTDOOR
ACTIVITIES THAT COULD CAUSE GRASS FIRES. AVOID EQUIPMENT THAT CAN
CAUSE SPARKS NEAR DRY GRASS OR BRUSH. DO NOT TOSS CIGARETTES ON
THE GROUND. REPORT NEW FIRES QUICKLY TO THE NEAREST FIRE
DEPARTMENT OR LAW ENFORCEMENT OFFICE.
