RANGELAND FIRE DANGER STATEMENT
NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE SIOUX FALLS SD
428 AM CDT FRI APR 18 2014

.DISCUSSION...
SOUTHERLY FLOW WILL INCREASE THROUGHOUT THE MORNING...BECOMING
RATHER GUSTY THIS AFTERNOON...ESPECIALLY ALONG AND WEST OF THE JAMES
RIVER VALLEY...WHERE SUSTAINED WINDS OF 25 TO 30 MPH AND OCCASIONAL
GUSTS OF 40 TO 45 MPH ARE ANTICIPATED. THIS WILL BRING MUCH WARMER
AIR BACK INTO THE REGION...WITH AFTERNOON TEMPERATURES EXPECTED TO
RANGE FROM UPPER 50S AND LOWER 60S IN SOUTHWEST MINNESOTA...TO THE
LOWER TO MID 70S NEAR AND WEST OF THE JAMES RIVER. THIS WILL LEAD TO
VERY HIGH FIRE DANGER ACROSS MOST OF THE AREA...AND WILL BE WATCHING
HUMIDITY LEVELS CLOSELY THROUGH THE LATE MORNING/EARLY AFTERNOON. AT
THIS TIME...DEW POINTS ARE PROJECTED TO CLIMB INTO THE MID TO UPPER
30S...WHICH WOULD KEEP MINIMUM HUMIDITY LEVELS GENERALLY IN THE 25
TO 35 PERCENT RANGE ACROSS SOUTH CENTRAL/SOUTHEAST SOUTH DAKOTA...
NORTHEAST NEBRASKA AND NORTHWEST IOWA. HOWEVER...IF THESE DEW POINTS
DO NOT RISE AS EXPECTED...THE LOWER BRULE AREA AND POSSIBLY PORTIONS
OF THE JAMES RIVER VALLEY COULD SEE HUMIDITY LEVELS REACH CRITICAL
VALUES OF 25 PERCENT OR LOWER.

CONSIDER POSTPONING BURNING DUE TO THE VERY HIGH FIRE DANGER.

WINDS WILL BE DIMINISHING TODAY AS WEAK HIGH PRESSURE SETTLES
ACROSS THE AREA. AREAS GENERALLY NEAR AND NORTH OF INTERSTATE 90
WILL KEEP FIRE DANGER SUPPRESSED DUE TO MELTING OF THE SNOWFALL
FROM YESTERDAY ALONG WITH THE LIGHT WINDS. BY FRIDAY...A STRONG
SOUTH TO SOUTHEAST WIND FLOW WILL DEVELOP AND IN COMBINATION WITH
HUMIDITY FROM 35 TO 45 PERCENT RESULT IN A VERY HIGH DANGER IN
MUCH OF SOUTHEAST SOUTH DAKOTA AND EXTREME NORTHEAST NEBRASKA.

EXERCISE CAUTION DURING OFF ROAD USE OF YOUR VEHICLE AS THE
CATALYTIC CONVERTER CAN START WILDFIRES.

NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE SIOUX FALLS SD
506 AM CDT WED APR 16 2014

.DISCUSSION...
A SURGE OF WARMER AND DRY AIR AHEAD OF AN ADVANCING COLD FRONT
WILL RESULT IN SOME VERY LOW HUMIDITIES LATER THIS MORNING THROUGH
MID AFTERNOON SOUTHEAST OF A PONCA NEBRASKA TO SPENCER IOWA LINE.
SOUTH TO SOUTHWEST WINDS WILL ALSO INCREASE TO A GUSTY 20 TO 35 MPH.
IF THE HUMIDITY ENDS UP 5 TO 10 PERCENT LOWER...BE AWARE THAT THE
FIRE DANGER COULD GO TO EXTREME ACROSS EXTREME NORTHEAST NEBRASKA
AND PARTS OF NORTHWEST IOWA. A STRONG COLD FRONT WILL PUSH ACROSS
THE AREA IN THE EARLY TO MID AFTERNOON HOURS...WITH A RISE IN
HUMIDITY BEHIND THE FRONT ALONG WITH THE THREAT FOR SOME LIGHT
PRECIPITATION.

DEBRIS BURNING IS THE NUMBER ONE CAUSE OF WILDFIRES...SO PLEASE BE
CAREFUL WITH ANY USE OF FIRE.
