Development and Delivery Schedule

AWIPS Build
Expected Delivery
Functionality
OB6
Fall '05
Hail Diagnostics
SCAN now produces new hail diagnostic grids for display in
the D2D. For OB6, these grids include three VIL Density
Products. Beyond OB6, additional multiple-sensor hail diagnostic
grids will be made available.
OB6
Fall '05
Time of Arrival / Lead Time Tool
SCAN has provided a tool very similar to the Speed/Distance
Tool, both of which are available via the Tools menu on the D2D.
For information on the Time of Arrival / Lead Time Tool, check
out the section of the AWIPS User's Guide that addresses the
Tools menu.
OB6
Fall '05
Use of MDA Output
SCAN now uses the output from the MDA algorithm
(radar product MD, #141) instead of the old Meso algorithm
(radar product M, #60) on the ORPG. SCAN displays this
info in the Cell and Meso Tables, and also makes use of it in
the Unwarned County functionality and in the issuance of New Alarms.
OB6
Fall '05
'New Alarm' Threshold
The time threshold used for determining New Alarms for the DMD
have been added to the New Alarm Time Setup GUI, and thus
can now be manually changed more easily.
OB5
Spring '05

Service Backup
SCAN can now work off of radar products ingested via the SBN.
SCAN will analyze identified storm cellsfor any volume scan and
any recognized radar and provide output that is displayable in the
D2D from the SCAN menu.

OB5
Spring '05

Rapid Update ‘New’ Alarms
In OB4, the DMD was made available via SCAN, but
New alarms were not implemented. Now, the New alarms
are implemented for the DMD and the way is paved for
additional rapid update products.

OB5
Spring '05

SCAN Zero Table Update
The occasional problem of the SCAN Storm Cell Table updating
with all zeros has been fixed. The fix may make it into an OB4
Maintenance Release, but as of this writing, that decision has not
been made. (Note that the fix was a regression from memory
mapped byte data files back to regular text data files.)

OB5
Spring '05

Unwarned County Alarm Enhancement
The Unwarned County Alarm function was misbehaving under certain
rare circumstances. This has been fixed, so the Unwarned County Alarm
should be behaving better.

OB4
Fall '04
Digital Mesocyclone Display (DMD)
SCAN can now display the DMD radar product, which is a rapid-update,
circulation detection product. This has its own separate display and GUI,
just like SCAN's Storm Cell Display.
OB4
Fall '04
New Storm Cell Graphic Icons
Because the traditional shape of a mesocyclone icon is a circle, and SCAN
now displays the DMD, we needed to change the current Storm Cell icon
(a circle) to something different. After soliciting the field, we compromised
on using hexagons.
OB4
Fall '04
SCAN will provide a display for the Rapid Update Mesocyclone Detection
Algorithm radar product. It will look similar to the Storm Cell Table, but will
likely be separate.
OB3
Spring '04

SCAN will alarm for absolute thresholds, as well as rate of change thresholds.

OB3
Spring '04
Absolute Alarms
In OB3, the user can now provide cell attribute thresholds that, when met
or surpassed, will trigger an alarm. Rate of change alarms can also still be set.
OB3
Spring '04
Unwarned Counties
SCAN can now check the textdb data base for issued Severe Weather
and Tornado warnings. If user-defined conditions are met and there is no
corresponding warning in effect, then the SCAN Storm Cell Table will
inform the user. This will not help with lead time, but it could help with missed events.
OB3
Spring '04
Counties in multiple CWAs
It was assumed that every county in the U.S. is situated in one and only one
CWA. This assumption is false. In the past, SCAN would lose any county that straddled
one or more CWAs. In OB3, those lost counties have been recovered
OB3
Spring '04
SCAN will also alarm for counties that contain a significant storm cell
(based on user definition) but no active warning. This can be turned on/off
and configured by the user.
OB2
Fall '03
The new VCP number has changed from 77 to 12.
OB2
Fall '03
You can now decide whether you want to list all storm cells in the Cell
Table or just the storm cells within your CWA.
OB2
Fall '03
Leave the section regarding the 0-3 Hour Rainfall, Lightning and Severe
Weather Probabilities as is.
